Welcome to Mmabatho Stadium in Mafikeng, South Africa, a football ground with one of the most unique seating arrangements known to man.

The rationale behind such a design is unknown but there is one thing we can all be certain of: they literally cut corners with this one. The general assumption is that the inclusion of an athletics track at Mmabatho Stadium somehow resulted in the designers wanting to bring the spectators as close to the track as possible, and if that meant an unorthodox layout then so be it.

While we’re on the subject of strangely shaped football grounds, the gold medal surely must go to the following pitch. Traditionalists would say that a rectangular playing field is a fundamental requirement for a game of football but Brazil’s Tomazinho FC apparently have different ideas and play on a field which defies all ground design logic, as you can see in this picture courtesy of Google Earth.
